250,000 steps for Macmillan Cancer Support
At Water Environmental Treatment Ltd (W.E.T), we love celebrating the quirky and adventurous spirit of our team members. In April 2025, one of our dedicated managers, Gary, along with his wife Addi, completed a charity walk that was anything but ordinary, raising an impressive £1750 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The journey
Gary and Addi embarked on a remarkable journey from London to Tamworth, walking along the scenic Grand Union, Oxford, and Coventry Canals. Over the course of the week, they covered a staggering 140 miles. This adventure was not just a test of physical endurance but also a heartfelt tribute to the invaluable support Macmillan Cancer provides to individuals and families affected by cancer.
Introducing Sherwood, the adventurous teddy bear
Accompanying them on this journey was Sherwood, a trusty teddy bear with a history of adventure. Sherwood had previously hiked Machu Picchu in 2017, also in support of Macmillan Cancer. Throughout the walk, Sherwood's escapades were shared on Instagram (@teddy_sherwood), bringing smiles to their supporters.
The challenges and triumphs
Despite not being seasoned hikers, Gary and Addi faced the challenges of the walk with determination and a sense of humour. From blisters and sore knees, to helping rescue stranded canal boats, every step was taken in honour of those they have lost and in support of those still fighting cancer. Their journey was a testament to the power of community and the impact of collective effort.
The inspiration
Gary and Addi's motivation for this walk was deeply personal. They wanted to give back to Macmillan Cancer Support, an organistion that has been a pillar of strength for many during challenging times. Their journey was a way to say thank you and to raise awareness and funds for the cause.
A message from Gary
Reflecting on the experience, Gary said, "I was overwhelmed by the support we had throughout the experience, from friends & family, colleagues and even the various strangers we met along our journey. Even more surprising was arriving at our final checkpoint and seeing all of our supporters, including the team from W.E.T, who had come to clap us over the finish line. Thank you to everyone who donated to this wonderful charity. We are honoured to contribute to such a worthy cause and grateful for the opportunity to give back."
