LEGIONELLA TRAINING AND COMPETENCE

Do I need Legionella training / competency assessment?

  • Inadequate management, lack of training and poor communication are all contributory factors in outbreaks of legionnaires’ disease [ACoP L8].
  • All people involved in assessing and controlling the risks of Legionella need to be competent, trained and aware of their responsibilities.
  • Crucially, the ‘Responsible Person’ of an organisation appointed by the Duty Holder to be managerially responsible, requires the sufficient skills to perform their duties [MHSWR 1999]
  • Anyone in an organisation can be appointed as the ‘Responsible Person’ as long as they have the authority, competency and skills to ensure that tasks are carried out in a safe, timely and effective manner.

“Competence is the ability to undertake responsibilities and perform activities to a recognised standard on a regular basis. It combines practical and thinking skills, knowledge and experience.”
HSE

What does Legionella training / competency assessment involve?

W.E.T offer a number of training solutions to help Duty Holders comply with the MHSWR 1999 and more specifically ACoP L8.

  • Basic Legionella awareness training - A short, online awareness tool to share with all levels of staff within your organisation.
  • Practical training – Onsite, hands-on practical demonstration and competence assessment for any staff performing specific control scheme tasks (such as temperature monitoring).
  • Classroom training – A higher-degree of knowledge and theory than basic awareness training to complement practical training.
  • Responsible Person training – A face-to-face training course (in person or virtually), with W.E.T’s experienced Compliance Team, providing an organisation’s appointed Responsible Person with a suitable level of knowledge to perform their duties.
  • External training – For any organisation which requires a higher level of competency due to the nature of risk on site, a number of training courses are available including City & Guilds accredited.
